Intermarque A good turnout of 19 cars, including welcome German visitor Volker Timm, made the prospect of some interesting races. Malcolm Blackman threw the gauntlet down in qualifying setting the fastest lap in 49.317 seconds. Steve Burrows came up with the next best time, just half a second slower. However, we did not see Steve again as the strain broke his engine. So instead Lewis Smith completed the front row, followed by Chris Brockhurst and the leading senior driver Keith White. Row three contained Mike Thurley and Simon Smith, whilst row four should have seen Ian Hales and Richard Smith, but the Mercedes was also missing with engine dramas. The similar car of Mark Fuller was present, followed by Ayling, Taylor and Young. Ricky Hunn was hoping his VW Corrado would be more reliable and the grid was completed by Blackford, Loram, Steward and Timm. Another non-starter would be Daniel Smith, who only completed one lap before his VW expired.

Intermarque The rolling start for race one saw Blackman shoot off into a comfortable lead as Lewis Smith fended off Brockhurst and a determined Simon Smith. The first three remained fairly static as Simon Smith fell back to battle with his senior rivals Thurley and White. These three soon had Hales for company, as the former short circuit Legends champion showed some good form. Thurley got past Simon Smith when the green BMW developed a misfire. White also took advantage and moved up to fifth, but Hales had to wait until lap 16 to find a way past the slowing Smith. Blackford had a good race, reeling in and passing Young on his way to 8th place. Mr Cheese finished a smiling 9th, keeping Ayling at bay, whilst Reuben Taylor was a bit subdued in 11th. John Steward completed the finishers after we lost Timm, Fuller, Brian Loram and Hunn.

Intermarque The 9th place finisher was promoted to pole position for race two, so Young proudly led the 14 starters off on the rolling lap. Hunn’s engine woes stopped him from joining in, but he did lend his MBE box to Simon Smith which cured his misfire. Hales also missed the second race for an undisclosed reason. Blackford had the honour of leading at the end of lap one, but charging through into second was Lewis Smith. Thurley initially held third, until Blackman and Simon Smith drafted past. As Blackford gradually slipped back, it took a while for Brockhurst to move up. Indeed it was lap ten before he appeared in fourth position. Meanwhile Lewis Smith and Blackman were setting a blistering pace as they matched one another’s lap times. On lap 5 the smallest of gaps appeared as they went into Surtees and Malcolm was through in a flash. Lewis hung on gamely, but was never quite close enough to retaliate. With Simon Smith comfortable in third, and Brockhurst slotting into fourth it was down to Thurley and White to battle over fifth. The blue Tigra driver just held on by 0.3 of a second.

Intermarque Chris Ayling cured his earlier oil leak and came home a lonely 7th, whilst Blackford tried every way to defend his 8th spot from Fuller. The pair spent several laps side by side and the final run to the flag just went Mark’s way by 0.02 of a second. 10th went to Mr.Cheese, whilst Taylor had to work hard to fend off a feisty Steward. Timm completed the finishers after Loram again retired. The four Avon tyre winners were Richard Smith, Volker Timm, Ian Hales and Keith White. Blackford won the driver of the day award, whilst Blackman and White claimed the champion of Kent honours.
