Richard Smith, Vauxhall Tigra driver in Quaife Intermarque Championship, class HR.

BARC SEC: OK green flags – lets go: how did your adventure with motorsport get started?
Richard Smith: With my uncles Gordon and Jeff Scott both racing hot rods. In those days Ford Anglias and Mk1 Escorts and drivers Lee Polley and Collard - now known as the Nationals, My first car was a Toyota 1000 Group A hot rod then a Mazda 323 National. Racing at Arena Essex, always on a tight budget but enjoying it.

BS: You're behind the wheel of your Vauxhall Tigra. What is your dream racing car?
R.S.: Always loved the National Hot Rods so racing a silhouette around the long track does it for me!

BS: What is your dream motorsport event you want to take part in?
R.S.: A full grid of silhouettes. 30 cars!!! racing around Silverstone, Spa or Le Mans.

BS: Hard braking now – are there any other sport disciplines you're familiar with?
R.S.: Ski-ing – well, trying to, and off road motorbikes always good fun. Clay pigeon shooting good for a change.

BS: Racing is on weekends – what are you doing weekdays?
R.S.: Trying to earn money to feed our motorsport addiction by running the machinery and commercial sales business and the arable farm along with agricultural contracting. Also trying to promote the silhouettes.

BS: Who are your motorsport and non-motorsport heroes?
R.S.: Both sons Dan and Lewis, Barry Sheene, James Hunt, Jackie Stewart, Mike Thurley – oops, did I really say that!!! LoL.

BS: What are your expectations for 2014?
R.S.: Enjoy my racing, try and get into the top three and get more drivers to join us.

BS: Very tricky corner now – imagine there are no cars in the world, what would you do?
R.S.: Spend more time in Spain riding my motorbike and learning to fly a plane.

BS: And finish line – it's time for a drink. What's your favorite one?
R.S.: You can't beat a good cup of tea or coffee.

BS: Thanks and good luck.

Richard Smith
